Skull Island Campground

Tucked away in the country a little over 30 minutes from Chattanooga. You find a gem of a campground. Skull Island Campground sits in the shadow of the cooling towers of the Sequoia Nuclear Plant on TVA property. The campground was closed for many years and just reopened last year.

I’ve written before about Harrison Bay State park. Skull Island is about 15 minutes from there so if you are trying to find something in that area you should definitely look into Skull Island. This is not a large campground, 68 sites, but they did a nice job when it was rehabbed. Being located on a island most sites have at least a view of the water.

There’s a beach with a roped off swimming area, a camping store, Dump station, two bath houses and a cemetery located in the campground. There is a boat launch right before you get into the campground.

They do offer some sites by the month. You should call to reserve those instead of using the app or website. I will say that the monthly rates are very reasonable. The campground does not have a laundry.

The camp store is very well stocked to be so small. You can get ice cream, shirts, swim noodles, fire logs, picnic supplies, sunscreen, bug repellent and more. The camp hosts rotate working in the store and are super nice and helpful. They also offer firewood and ice at reasonable prices.

The campsites are mostly well laid out and roomy. I stayed a week on site #54 and a week on site #32. The later on the water. Both were much more spacious than most of the sites you will find at Harrison Bay. My one criticism is that I don’t understand why you would do a total rehab and not level all the sites up. There’s some pretty steep slopes to some of the lots.

Since the price increases at Chester Frost are ridiculous for a campground without full hookups. I will probably make Skull Island my home base when back in Chattanooga. If you looking for a place to camp on the lake you should check it out.
