Boldly Going Where I’ve Never Gone Before

I wrote a Sunday Morning Musings post put have been to busy to post so I’ll just drop some of it in here. I wrote it with my morning coffee. I had spent the last few days prepping the camper for my westward trip. The musings were mainly about the excitement and trepidation I was feeling about my trip and sadness of leaving all my snowbird friends.

Sunday Morning

Today is the the day. The winter crew is gone or going. I’ll be pulling out in an hour or two. It always a sad time full of hugs and well wishes for safe travel. It’s going to be a busy morning. I didn’t get as much packed up as planned. Yesterday I focused on the outside. I washed the camper, got the propane tanks filled and all the outside stuff packed. After all that I was tired and sore and let’s face it. Alabama was playing for a chance to go to the first Final Four in school history. I had to watch, right?

I actually packed some while the game was on but I still have probably 30 minutes stowing and securing left to go inside. The shelving I bought for the basement storage area worked amazingly well. I do need to add a topper to them so legs and things don’t go there the wire top. I’ve seen people do this with plastic shelves that already had a solid top and that works great to. I choose these shelves because I can actually adjust the height if I need to and they are still light.

One of the things I enjoyed last year was boat rides with Scott and Gayle, the owners at Blue Heron Escape RV Resort. Between the weather, work and my extra trips away from the resort I had not gotten to hang out on the boat with them this year. So even though I had work to do the the RV, when they asked me Friday evening I just couldn’t say no. We rode over and got Burgers and Bushwhackers to go at LuLu’s, then rode out to Bon Secor Bay to watch the sunset. I made the right call. I can install things on the RV anytime but time spent with friends watching sunsets is fleeting.

In the last two weeks I spent a week back home to see family and friends, made a trip to South Dakota to establish residency and said goodbye to my winter friends. That’s a lot of goodbye’s and now I’ve struck out solo to adventure to my hearts content and then some.

Anyway, Sunday morning I quickly ran out of time and coffee so I loaded up the truck and headed to New Iberia…..Louisiana…….Gators….Crawfish….Po-boys.

Louisiana

Yes I watched to much TV growing up. Bonus points if you got both references. What I didn’t do was travel much. Especially not west of Alabama. I did go to New Orleans and the Worlds Fair once when I was 14. I for sure had never been to New Iberia, LA. Well now I have. I drove all day and setup just as the sun was preparing to set. So I had three nights to sleep and 2 days to explore. My destination was Isle Of Iberia RV Resort and I will post about it later.

I picked New Iberia so I could stop at the Tabasco Factory. The distance was right and I had heard it was a good thing to tour. I found it interesting, I love history so I especially enjoyed the museum and all the family and island history. The tour itself was self directed and just so so to be honest. I’ve been on better tours and I much prefer a person to looped video kiosks but it was interesting none the less. The weather was perfect, The food at the restaurant was good and it was interesting to see what all they put Tabasco images on to sell you a trinket. The tasting station was fun. I had to actually do the tour on my way out of town, on my way to Texas. I didn’t get to do the Jungle tour and I think that would have been really good.

The day before I took a swamp tour with Cajun Country Swamp Tours and I really enjoyed it. It was a sunset tour. The guide was entertaining, The weather was perfect and amazingly there were no bugs. I was expecting big, killer mosquitos with massive fangs. I had spray with me but didn’t need it. I did not see or feel a single one.

I managed to squeeze in some food and a brewery. If you are in the area you must have a po-boy from Bon Creole. The other restaurant I visited was Prejeans. The food was very good I recommend the bread pudding for desert. Parish Brewing Co. has a large distribution so I have had their beer before. But the source was only 15 minutes from my campsite so couldn’t pass that up. The beer tender was a longtime employee and very knowledgeable about the brewery, it’s’ history and plans in the works. He really made my visit enjoyable, but what really made the stop great was the folks at the nearby table. We talked craft beer and SEC football. They gave me some great local tips such as Prejeans. They were fun and good company. Cathy and I always made friends when we were out places and now that I’m traveling solo I find this even more important.

Knowing that I was only there for 3 nights I only unpacked the coffee pot, my work laptop and the bedroom TV. This was especially handy when I realized I was going to have to visit Avery Island on the way out of town. I think it was the fastest I have ever packed up and it was good practice the road ahead. This was in high contrast to packing up 3 days before after being parked for four months.

I’m in College Station, TX now and the weather is perfect.
