We received an invite to check out a campground in Greensboro, GA. One of those where you get a gift or free week of camping, basically the timeshares of the camping world. I’m normally not enticed by these. They have been around since I was kid and I’ve been to several over the years. However, This one was for a campground I had visited several years before that I thought was kind of neat and it was close to a brewery we had wanted to visit.
We didn’t make a camping trip out of this one. Opting to just overnight somewhere as we wandered the area. I’m actually not going to spend to much time on this campground. It’s an old campground and has been owned by someone different each time I’ve stopped by. UPDATE: Currently it’s a KOA. The Lake Oconee/Greensboro KOA Holiday. It offers lake access, a pool, cabins, long term camping and train car stays. We spent a little time here, listened to the spill and hit the road in search of adventure.
Greensboro, GA is a cute little town of 3648 people. It’s a cute town near Lake Oconee. It’s like a lot of small towns these days seeing a bit of a renaissance of the old downtown. Trying to build some tourism and hang on to their history.

We felt fairly safe walking the streets of this quaint village on our way to the towns local brewery. The Oconee Brewing Company is situated in an old 6,000 sq/ft mill warehouse and opened in 2017. This unique venue doesn’t grab you as you kind of enter through a side door, but once you step further into the establishment you find it to be well designed and inviting. The main room boasts a back wall that is totally glass and looks out onto the patio which is actually part of the warehouse with partially missing walls and no roof. They have done a fantastic job of maintaining the history of the building.

The brewery is also an event center and it would be a great place for a wedding and the reception to follow. Our next stop was Madison, GA for lunch at Amici Madison. Madison is an historic little town and we plan to explore it further on a future trip. As it was we were hungry and thirsty. Amici Madison has a cool vibe, they have a full bar, live music and a brewery. The food was very good but we were not really that impressed by the beer. As you can see Cathy is the expressive one.

The next day we moved on to the real target of our adventure. Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, GA. This is one of the best breweries in the country in my opinion. I’m not sure that I’ve had a beer of theirs that I did not like. Recreation Ale is a crushable brew and I love Luau Krunkles, a fruity, Citrusy IPA. If you love hops you have to try Hopsecutioner. There was even a version of this made with ground up MLB bats. Terrapin makes one of my favorite sours, Watermelon Gose. It’s reminiscent of a watermelon Jolly Rancher. When winter hits my beer list always includes the Moo-Hoo chocolate milk stout.

Terrapin was hosting a special event this day for the USA Women’s Soccer team. They were playing for the championship. It was fun to cheer on our Women’s Team while drinking truly great beer. I should mention that Terrapin has a micro brewery inside the Atlanta Braves stadium.
